Day 2. NOSY BE – TANIKELY – KISMANY
Departure from Nosy Be to Nosy Tanikely (Marine National Park). It is a very small island, full of charm, an old lighthouse dominates the island and offers a 360° view. By reaching it, you will be able to meet important colonies of fruit bats (Fanihy) and chameleons. The beauty of the sea bed is renowned as much as the species that can be seen there. The place is not to be missed, you can only appreciate this beginning of the cruise (snorkeling, swimming, lunch at noon).
Early departure in the afternoon for the Kismany estuary, a calm anchorage. Possible small walking to visit the volcanic island. Canoe or dinghy outing to go up the river in the mangrove (you will find many species of birds). Visit of Kismany village where every year dhows from Zanzibar come to stock up on shark oil.
Day 3: KISMANY – RUSSIANS BAY
Several possibilities are offered to you:
− Either take advantage of the boat and make a stopover on the magnificent Ampohana beach, meal at anchor or on the beach.
− Either cross Ampasimena – Russians Bay on foot, with a guide who is the president of the district, he has a very good knowledge of the fauna and flora.
The journey time is about 4 hours, with a cumulative height difference of 320m, for a distance of about 10.3 km. Extremely varied walk, magnificent view on the Bay of Nosy be and its islets, then on the Russians Bay, picnic basket, arrival on the Marolay peninsula , East of the bay. The boat will be there at your arrival.
These two proposals are not incompatible, some can stay on the boat and others can walk.
We can also propose a shorter walk from Ampohana village to the ridges overlooking the Russians Bay. Walking time: 3h45mn, distance 9.7 km with a cumulative positive difference in altitude of 300 m.
Anchorage and night in the shelter of the Ankatafa peninsula, at the entrance to the magnificent Russians Bay (inland sea of 8.5 x 6.5 km). The marine environment is remarkable for its beauty and biodiversity, this region is known for the presence of dolphins, whale sharks, and manta rays. Humpback whales come up from Antarctica to mate and give birth in this area. Dinner on the boat or barbecue on the beach.
For the record, the Russian Bay owes its name to an imperial Russian squadron that started in St Petersburg and stopped there from December 1904 to March 1905. It was on March 16, 1905 that the Russian squadron set sail for Japan where it was decimated by the Japanese at Tsushima.
Day 4. RUSSIANS BAY – NOSY IRANJA – NOSY KALAKAJORO
Leaving the Russians Bay, you can stop at the Sugar Loaf, an isolated and steep volcanic island at the foot of which you can indulge in the joy of snorkeling. A 2 hour descent Southwards brings you to Nosy Iranja (the turtle island). This island is classified among the 30 most beautiful islands in the world. They are two paradisiacal islets (Nosy Iranja be, 200 ha, and Nosy Iranja kely, 13 ha) connected by a long white sandbank which is discovered at low tide, coral bottoms and crystal clear waters of all beauty.
From the top of the lighthouse built by Gustave Eiffel, at the top of Iranja Be, you will enjoy a 360° view. Formerly powered by oil, it no longer shines, but imposes its high metallic silhouette, in the shade of imposing centuries-old mango trees, the lighthouse keeper’s house has been transformed into a primary school.
Swimming is highly recommended while waiting for the Chef to prepare one of his specialties for you. Iranja kely is occupied by a charming hotel complex (the Nosy Iranja Lodge), an ideal place to enjoy an aperitif or lunch while enjoying a heavenly view (on reservation).
The visit of the turtle nesting site, on Iranja kely, is possible with a WWF guide. After lunch, you continue to the Radama Archipelago, where you will be able to use your fishing rods for the evening meal. Anchorage according to the sea in the shelter of one of the 4 Northern islands of the Archipelago.
Day 5. RADAMA ARCHIPELAGO DISCOVERY (from North to South: Nosy Kalakajoro, Nosy Berafia, Nosy Antanimora).
Nosy Kalakajoro is the highest of the Radama Archipelago. Stroll to the top of the island to enjoy a magnificent panorama, the intense vegetation of the island has long attracted some master marine carpenters who are called “Foundi”. These last ones knew how to preserve from generation to generation the know-how and the gesture (work exclusive to the adze) to create beautiful racy dhows which make the pride of their owner (traders of Analalava, Nosy Be, or isolated counters along this wild coast).
Nosy Berafia is the largest of the four Northern islands, 10km long and 3km wide.
In the South of the island there are various coffee, ylang ylang, pepper and chilli peppers plantations. Visiting the village of Mahabo, you will have to submit to some customs, as Mahabo hosts Sakalava royal tombs and the house of the Kabary where rites and palaver are perpetuated. Visit of Commander’s colonial house of this ex-concession which will plunge you into an exotic and old-fashioned charm of the 1920s. Possibility to visit a bush distillery, numerous bats and green pigeons. Possibility to buy some fruits and vegetables.
Nosy Antanimora, a small isolated island whose name means “The easy land”. A short hike to the top of the island allows you to embrace a grandiose panorama. Hundreds of birds have found a nesting place there. Superb sandbank discovered at low tide on the South-eastern tip. Its long beach to the North-east is occupied by a large Vezo fishermen camp. Sumptuous diving and underwater fishing on the island’s outskirts. The Radama Archipelago offers the possibility to organize deep-sea fishing trips, as well as scuba diving (from Kalakajoro Island).
Day 6. RADAMA – BARAMAHAMAY
An early morning departure will allow you to arrive around noon in Baramahamay, a pretty village at the entrance of the “Grande Terre”. The specialties of this village are the mangrove crabs fishing (huge and delicious) and the wild honey harvest.
Josiane and Théophile (president of the district) as well as the students will give you a warm welcome. You will be able to devote the afternoon to the visit of this village, and to short walks in the surroundings, a ridge path starting above the village, allows you to reach in one hour, a magnificent beach and its coconut grove. Dinner at your choice on the boat or “Aux bons crabes” small restaurant with your feet in the water where you can taste a very good homemade coconut punch.
Day 7. BARAMAHAMAY – MAROTONY BAY – RUSSIANS BAY
For walkers, a superb 12 km walk allows you to reach the Marotony Bay by pirogue, then on foot, where the boat will be waiting for you.
Those who prefer a bit of lazing around on the boat can enjoy a late morning, a swim… before quietly returning to the sea to join the walkers on the Bay of Marotony, in the early afternoon. Depending on the schedule, lunch at anchor or on the way to the Russians Bay (about 3 hours of sailing).
Dinner on board or on the beach in the setting of the Russians Bay.
Day 8. RUSSIANS BAY – AMPANGORINA (Nosy Komba )
A late morning arrival in Ampagorina will allow a smooth return to civilization. A quiet, family-friendly village with a beachfront lined with embroiderers’ tablecloths, where you can do some shopping for handicrafts.
A nice walk will take you to the top of this volcanic island (622m), other paths lead to different points of the island. Children and adults alike will be delighted to visit the park of the Makis (lemurs), which are very familiar and very fond of bananas.
For dinner, according to your wishes, on board or in one of the many small restaurants, with your feet in the water.
Day 9. NOSY KOMBA (Ampangorina) – NOSY BE
Program as you wish, either direct return to the crater of Nosy Be (1h30mn of navigation) and disembarkation.
Either visit of the sumptuous primary forest of Lokobe Integral Nature Reserve (South of Nosy be) on the port side for a walk from 1h to 2h in a dense vegetation with many lemurs, boas constrictors (harmless), many birds, chameleons, and lizards. The only original forest area that remains on the island of Nosy Be. This tropical rainforest plunges abruptly into the sea, offering striking contrasts of emerald and turquoise.
Or Nosy Komba Island tour with its beautiful wild beaches of the South (4 to 5h).
